Naletale, Zimbabwe

The Shona civilisation (and their precursors and successors) left famous remains at Great Zimbabwe and Khami. They also left a less well-known network of sites throughout the Zimbabwean plateau. Naletale was built on a hill with a commanding view of the surrounding plains. The primary architectural feature is a monumental wall which features all five designs of the architectural tradition: chevrons, herringbone, chequers, ironstone inlaid bands and standard cords. This is a late afternoon shot: the remoter sites tend to be down dirt roads, off better dirt roads, off a good dirt road and the lonely curators will gratefully offer a free camping spot in exchange for some company for an evening
