This image shows the pilgrim road leading to the monastery at Montserrat in the Catalonia region of North East Spain. Forming part of a network of pilgrim routes through Spain and France, Montserrat sits on the Camino Catelan which takes pilgrims from Catalonia to the important religious site at Santiago de Compostela. Around 2 million pilgrims and tourists visit Montserrat each year, however, unlike this hardy soul, most choose to ride the modern funicular railway to reach the monastery.
The lone figure lends a sense of scale to the dramatic mountain landscape. We wonder about their story: are they climbing or descending the stairs, where are they heading and why are they there.
