Erbil Citadel, Erbil, Kurdistan, Iraq

The Ancient Citadel, occupied since the 5th Millenium BC and a UNESCO World Heritage site looms over the central square in Erbil where the local Kurdish population live an uneasy existence, just 90 miles from the raging battles in Mosul, a self-declared autonomous republic that might find its independence challenged when a stable government returns to Iraq.

Far away from the tourist track, the city is friendly and open but military patrols, roadblocks and helicopter gunships are an everyday sight.
